🟥 The epiglottis is a cartilaginous flap that covers the trachea during swallowing to prevent food and drinks from entering the lungs. It originates at the entrance of the larynx and is attached to the hyoid bone. The space between the epiglottis and the tongue is called the vallecula. 
🟥 Elastic cartilage is made of the protein elastin, which gives the cartilage its flexibility, and collagen type II fibers. The epiglottis joins the external ear and the auditory tube of the middle ear.
